A pool loses almost all its heat at the surface, two ways: evaporation — about 70% of total loss — and transmission, warmth passing up through the surface into the night air. Any good cover shuts down evaporation; ours cut it by about 98%. Where a thermal cover pulls ahead is transmission: its 5 mm closed-cell foam core works like a lid on a pot, and is manufacturer-rated at R 0.144 m²·K/W — the insulation behind the ~75% cut in overnight heat loss.
That’s the whole job description: a thermal pool blanket doesn’t make heat, it keeps the heat your heat pump, gas or solar system already paid for.

The honest answer comes down to one question — is your pool heated?
Unheated pool: choose a solar cover. Its transparent bubbles feed free daytime warmth into the water — a foam cover is opaque and adds almost none, which makes thermal the wrong cover for an unheated pool.

Do thermal pool covers actually work?
On a heated pool, measurably: the foam core is rated R 0.144 m²·K/W and cuts overnight heat loss by around 75%, on top of stopping ~98% of evaporation. The savings scale with how much you currently spend keeping the water warm.
What’s the difference between a thermal blanket and a bubble blanket?
A bubble (solar) blanket is transparent and gains heat from the sun but insulates modestly. A thermal blanket is 5 mm of opaque closed-cell foam — little solar gain, far stronger insulation. Heated pool → thermal. Unheated pool → solar.
Will a thermal cover warm up an unheated pool?
Not meaningfully — foam is opaque, so solar gain is minimal. It holds existing heat rather than creating it. For an unheated pool a solar cover is the right choice, and we’d rather tell you that now than after you’ve bought the wrong cover.
Can a thermal pool cover go on a roller?
Yes — completely roller-compatible, and it works with our standard rollers. On rectangular pools it’s also reversible, so you can turn it periodically to spread UV wear across both faces.
