What is Micron Grade?
Definition of Pool Cover Micron Grade
Micron grade refers to the amount of thermo-plastic material incorporated into a pool cover. A cover with a micron grade that is twice as high will contain double the amount of plastic material per square meter.
Many pool owners prioritize the micron grade when purchasing covers, often without fully comprehending its meaning, significance, and limitations as a measure for pool covers.
What Does Micron Grade Mean for Me? - Years of Durability
Essentially, a higher micron grade allows the cover to endure years of exposure to pool chemicals and sunlight. This is why we provide longer warranties for covers with higher micron grades.
BTW, Are Higher Micron Grades Harder to Handle? No
In practice, all our covers are easy to handle, no matter the micron grade. When the cover floats on the pool surface, its weight is fully supported. Therefore, the average user would not notice any difference in terms of ease of handling.
Does Micron Grade Effect Heating Performance? Yes, to some extent
All our covers provide excellent heating performance, thanks to their design and materials. Higher micron grades do have a modest heating advantage (providing greater heat insulation, especially overnight).
That said, nearly all our clients are suprised by the heating benefits of even our 250 micron cover.
Is Micron Grade the Most Important Durability Factor?
No, Materials Used, Production Quality and Country of Origin is even more important
Micron Grade indicates the amount of ‘plastic’ material present in your cover per square meter. However, it does not provide any information about the quality of the polymer materials used.
Various covers may appear identical, with each claiming to utilize ‘high-quality’ LDPE (low-density polyethylene). However, this designation can be ambiguous, as it does not convey any details about the quality of crucial components such as ‘anti-oxidizing agents,’ ‘UV inhibitors,’ and ‘plasticizers.
Furthermore, rushed (low-cost) manufacturing processes involving inferior equipment and poor quality control can result in delicate and uneven bubble quality.
Therefore, when considering the durability of a cover over the years, the choice of materials (and consequently the brand) becomes even more significant than the micron grade. Therefore, when considering the durability of a cover over the years, the choice of materials (and consequently the brand) becomes even more significant than the micron grade.

Can I Compare Micron Grade Between Brands?
Definitely Not
Within a particular brand or range, a higher micron grade will indeed result in a longer lifespan for the cover. However, the design, manufacturing process, and plastic formulation used will have an even greater impact. Materials and manufacturing details can vary significantly between different brands.
This is why our Australian 250 micron grade cover can easily outlast a typical Chinese 500 micron grade cover, which might be available for purchase on platforms like eBay or at Bunnings.
Additionally, it’s important to note that our covers are certified to comply with the requirements of authorities such as the Sydney Water Board and various councils across Australia. Many alternative covers may not meet the criteria set by these authorities.
BTW - Does Colour Affect Heating? - Not Really
Based on our experience, all our covers demonstrate excellent heating results, regardless of their color. The choice of color primarily comes down to personal taste and preference.
Our 550 micron Blue Titanium cover may offer a slight heating advantage, as it is slightly darker than other cover varieties. However, the difference is so minimal that it would be difficult to detect without the use of precise testing equipment.
