REPLACEMENT POOL LINERS – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
INTRODUCTION
Pool Express offers Australia’s largest selection of replacement liners for above-ground pools. We are the leading retailer for ABGAL, Australia’s largest liner manufacturer. ABGAL manufactures most of the original liners supplied with new above-ground pools, including brands like Sterns, Classic, Clark, Zodiac, and Driclad. Purchasing a liner from Pool Express typically ensures you’re getting an exact replacement, not an inferior after-market replica. We offer hundreds of sizes, covering virtually every above-ground pool model available in Australia over the last 40 years.
WHEN IS IT TIME TO REPLACE A LINER?
Typically, liners need replacement when a pool begins losing water. If you’re fortunate enough to locate the leak, a repair kit may temporarily resolve the issue.
HOW LONG SHOULD A LINER LAST, AND WHAT CAUSES DETERIORATION?
Our clients report liner lifespans ranging from 4 to over 15 years, making an average lifespan difficult to define. Factors influencing liner deterioration include:
Leaving a pool empty for extended periods, causing the vinyl to dry out, crack, and leak upon refilling.
Pool maintenance quality—consistently well-maintained pools typically have longer-lasting liners.
Chemical over-treatment, either manually or via a salt chlorinator, can significantly shorten a liner’s lifespan.
Neglecting pool maintenance over winter, resulting in aggressive chlorine treatments in summer, can severely weaken liners.
HOW DO I MEASURE MY POOL FOR A NEW LINER?
LENGTH – Measure from end to end, wall to wall.
WIDTH – Measure the narrowest point between opposite support posts. Liners stretch to accommodate slightly wider areas.
DEPTH – Generally non-critical as our liners include extra material for pools with wall heights up to 1.37m.
While most pools are oval, we provide liners for round, keyhole, and teardrop-shaped pools. Use our “Pool Liner Selection Wizard” for precise shape and size selection, including deep-end variations.
CAN I INSTALL A LINER MYSELF OR SHOULD I HIRE A PROFESSIONAL?
Around 90% of our clients successfully self-install their liners. Professional installers, although available, can be costly ($5,000-$7,000). Many clients install their liners effectively using DIY instructional videos found on YouTube.
DOES LINER THICKNESS MATTER?
Virtually all liners are 0.5mm thick (500 microns). Thickness beyond this would complicate installation. Quality differences lie in vinyl quality and seam weld integrity. Our liners use premium vinyl resistant to algae and feature durable “smart seam” welds.
ARE OUR WARRANTIES RELIABLE?
ABGAL, our liner manufacturer, provides dedicated after-sales support. Warranty claims, though extremely rare, are managed efficiently and professionally.
